Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Department of State Services (DSS), Meta (owners of Facebook and Instagram), and X (formerly Twitter).

Sowore is asking the court to restrain these social media platforms from deleting or taking down his posts where he referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.”

According to court filings, Sowore argues that his right to freedom of expression is being unlawfully infringed upon by the combined actions of state security agencies and private tech companies. He maintains that his comments about Tinubu are within his constitutional rights and that any attempt to silence him amounts to censorship and a violation of democratic principles.

The case will test the balance between free expression, state powers, and the role of global social media companies in moderating political speech.

The lawsuit follows a separate development in which the DSS filed criminal charges against Sowore over similar comments directed at the President, a move that has sparked public debate on digital rights, free speech and government accountability in Nigeria.

Legal analysts say the suit could set an important precedent for how content moderation by foreign platforms is treated under Nigerian law, and whether courts will intervene when state agencies and private companies appear to act in concert against an individual's speech.

We will update this story as the court proceedings develop.
