⚡ Peter Obi Calls Out Government Over Broken Electricity Promise
Date: September 11, 2025
Obi Reminds Administration of 2022 Campaign Promise
Peter Obi, former presidential candidate and political commentator, has reminded the current Nigerian administration of its campaign promise made on December 22, 2022. During the campaign, the president stated: "If I Don't Give You Constant Electricity in The Next 4 Years, Don't Vote For Me For Second Term."
Current Power Situation in Nigeria
Nigeria, despite billions of dollars invested in the power sector over the years, continues to experience repeated national grid failures and widespread blackouts. While other developing nations like Vietnam, Egypt, Indonesia, and Bangladesh have significantly increased electricity generation, Nigeria has only marginally increased supply from 4,500MW to 5,000MW.
Economic Impact of Power Shortages
Peter Obi emphasized that Nigeria's GDP, currently around $200 billion, could grow substantially if electricity generation increased. Achieving a minimum of 10,000MW could potentially raise GDP by about 50%, unlock industrial growth, create millions of jobs, and support SMEs, which are crucial for economic expansion.
Criticism of Government Priorities
Obi criticized the current administration's focus on projects like coastal roads, which have a lesser impact on economic growth, while factories shut down and businesses collapse due to insufficient electricity. He called for urgent prioritization of electricity generation and distribution to empower businesses and improve the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.
Call to Action
Peter Obi’s message serves as a stern reminder to the government to honor its promise and focus on addressing the country’s electricity crisis. He stresses that delivering reliable power is essential for industrial growth, job creation, and overall economic development.
