Lagos Orders Suspension of All Land Reclamation Projects
The Lagos State Government has directed the immediate suspension of all reclamation projects across the state due to serious environmental concerns. The announcement was made by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Thursday.
Reason for the Suspension
According to the commissioner, uncontrolled reclamation activities on wetlands, floodplains, and lagoons have created dangerous risks, including flooding and damage to fragile ecosystems. Wahab noted that many projects are being carried out without proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approvals and drainage clearance.
“Consequently, the ministry is by this notice directing all reclamation projects across the state, with or without EIA approval and drainage clearance, to be suspended immediately,” Wahab said.
Areas Affected
The ministry listed several locations where reclamation activities are ongoing, including:
- Parkview
- Banana Island
- Osborne
- Ikoyi and Victoria Island Extension
- Lekki and Ajah
- Oworonshoki
- Parts of Ikorodu
Compliance and Sanctions
The commissioner gave developers a seven-day ultimatum to comply with the directive. Failure to do so will result in:
- Site decommissioning
- Removal of illegal landfills
- Reopening of blocked drainage channels
- Arrest and prosecution of violators
“Enough is enough,” Wahab declared, warning that the government will no longer tolerate practices that endanger residents and expose Lagos to flooding.
Government’s Position
The Lagos State Government emphasized its commitment to enforcing environmental laws to protect lives, safeguard infrastructure, and promote sustainable urban development. All ongoing and intending reclamation projects must now undergo proper environmental assessment and secure official clearance before resumption.
